Commonwealth Essays and Studies

Commonwealth Essays and Studies is journal of criticism devoted to the study of postcolonial literatures, in all periods and genres.

Since 1983, the journal has been published twice a year; every other issue is devoted to the proceedings of the yearly Société des Anglicistes de l’Enseignement Supérieur (SAES) thematic workshop on “New Literatures,” and is guest-edited by the chair of the workshop. The other yearly issue proposes a more particular topic, or focuses on a specific writer, and international specialists are invited to contribute. Each issue also welcomes interviews and reviews on literary topics.

The evolution of the journal’s contents reflects the conceptual shift from Commonwealth studies to postcolonial studies, and the present interest in the effects of globalisation on English-language literature.

28.2 | 2006 – Derek Walcott

Couverture du n° 28-2 | 2006, - Derek Walcott

Commonwealth Essays and Studies 28.2 (“Derek Walcott”) is an exceptional issue devoted to the poetic works of Derek Walcott, winner of the 1992 Nobel Prize for Literature. The volume includes an original address by Walcott, as well as a discussion between Walcott and fellow Caribbean writer E.A. Markham. The essays are a selection of papers from the international conference at the Sorbonne Nouvelle on 17-18 March 2006 in which Walcott participated. Many of the contributors are specialists in the field of Caribbean literature and acknowledged Walcott specialists, and they discuss issues such as intertextuality, polyphony, performance, writing and reading practices, poetry, language, and society, as well as questions of reception in an age of an increasingly transnational readership.
