The blog proposes to report on the making of a research program on borealism. By forging the term of borealism, this research program has the ambitionto trace the history of displacements, transformations, circulations referring to the “North”. Going beyond the definition of borealism as a transposition of orientalism, it explores the conceptual frameworks of such a program, by crossing the epistemological tools that the historical sciences, geography, comparative literature and more generally cultural history have developed in the field of the history of representations. Borealism thus appears as a framework for thinking a spatial conceptuality refusing an essentialization of the “North” and the collective imagination associated with it, and to grasp a dynamic process redefining the "North” at each utterance. The blog will serve as a platform for disseminating texts, reading reviews and seminar reports and will be fed by the work of the borealism research seminar led by Sylvain Briens and Pierre Brice Stahl at Sorbonne University in collaboration with the Nordic Library of Paris.
